For the first time, the European Commission has launched a brand new award to highlight the quality work done by cities, towns, or regions in Europe to promote inclusion and create discrimination-free societies - the European Capitals of Inclusion and Diversity. Intelligent Cities Challenge (ICC) cities that have pursued innovative diversity and inclusion policies are encouraged to apply before 15 February 2022.

Submissions should showcase how diversity and inclusion is being promoted in terms of sex, racial or ethnic origin, religion or belief, disability, age or LGBTIQ identity. The award is divided in two main categories – local authorities of more than 50 000 inhabitants and less 50 000 inhabitants. Furthermore, there will be a special award dedicated to Roma inclusion.

This new award is a significant step in the EU anti-racism action plan and is part of a path toward a Union of Equality. The ICC therefore strongly encourages cities to embrace the opportunity to consider which initiatives are promoting diversity and inclusion and submit these.

The award acknowledges the key role that cities play in the advancement of these key principles, as EU Commissioner for Equality, Helena Dalli emphasized “Cities and local communities contribute to fostering a sense of belonging and the sharing of common values. Where diversity is elevated as a priority, it is also a source of richness and innovation“. This statement shows that the award also offers a chance for reflection on what more cities can be doing to further this important work.

The entry can be made in any EU official language, but it is encouraged to submit in English. Any city, town or region can apply, an official representative must complete the submission. More conditions are available in the Guidance Note

If you are promoting diversity and creating a discrimination-free environment, you are invited to apply here before February 15 2022. The Award ceremony will be held on 28 April 2022.
