The Portuguese municipality of Valongo is located in the District of Porto, facing the north of the country. With a population of around 93,000 inhabitants, the municipality has benefited economically from the growth of its neighbouring Porto.
In 2018, the municipality of Valongo set up the Digital Citizenship Centre in partnership with CDI Portgual - the local NGO that uses digital solutions and technology to foster social inclusion, digital literacy and active citizenship. Not only does the initiative equip its citizens with the right digital tools to foster innovation, it also makes the local digital transition socially and generationally inclusive.
Valongo’s vision for its own transformation into a smart city is centred on building a circular economy. It recognises that a circular model helps cities to preserve finite resources, promote sustainable growth, create jobs and significantly reduce CO2 emissions.
Valongo aims to turn itself into an incubator for innovation and an attractive area for investment.
