Heraklion is the capital of the island of Crete, one of the most fascinating and vibrant cities of the Mediterranean region. Located at the crossroads of three continents, it has been a city of great influence throughout history.
To counter the financial austerity, Heraklion focused its energies on tourism and the agricultural sector.
Heraklion has shaped its transformation into a smart city around six pillars: citizens, smart living, energy and environment, digital transformation, economy and mobility and transportation. The city brings these pillars together within a holistic approach where information technologies create and strengthen human networks, businesses, infrastructure and resources with the support of smart administrative tools.
Heraklion was a participant city in the DCC.
